Brentford’s young duo of Justin Shaibu and Ellery Balcombe have today joined National League side Boreham Wood on loan. Both players trained with their new teammates this morning, Monday 6 August, having completed their moves to Meadow Park.
Striker Justin will spend the season on loan with last year’s National League Play-Off finalists, while Ellery has signed a Youth Loan with the Hertfordshire Club which runs through until Tuesday 1 January.
Commenting on the pair’s respective moves to Hertfordshire, Brentford FC Head Coach Dean Smith said: “It will be a good experience for both of them to go to Boreham Wood to play matches. We went there in pre-season and it is a good pitch and a good standard of football. We feel that they will benefit extensively at this time from playing competitive matches.”
Justin was one of the first players to join Brentford’s B Team in the summer of 2016 and made an instant impact. He scored regularly in B Team friendlies during his first campaign and forced his way in to the First Team match day squad. He signed a new three-year contract last summer, which also saw him promoted to the First Team group permanently. Justin made his First Team debut in the EFL Cup at Exeter City in August 2016 and made his Sky Bet Championship bow against Rotherham United in February 2017. He made three more Championship appearances that season and was an unused substitute on four further occasions.
Injuries restricted Justin’s First Team appearances last season but he did notch his first goal in English football in a Carabao Cup win against AFC Wimbledon at the start of the campaign. He contributed assists in further Carabao Cup ties against Queens Park Rangers and Norwich City and made two more substitute appearances in the Championship. Justin has represented Denmark at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-20 level and has 11 international appearances to his credit, scoring twice. The 20-year-old spent the second-half of the season on loan with Sky Bet League One side Walsall, helping The Saddlers to avoid relegation on the final day of the season.
Ellery, an England Under-19 international, signed a new four-year contract with Brentford at the end of June after coming through the ranks at Griffin Park. The stopper was part of the original Brentford B squad in 2016 and has since gone on to make 55 appearances for the B Team. As a 17-year-old, Ellery was named on the bench for the Sky Bet Championship game against Fulham in November 2016. He was also in the matchday squad for the Emirates FA Cup tie against Notts County at the start of this year.
This summer Ellery was an ever-present for England’s Under-19s at the European Championships in Finland. His four appearances took his England cap tally to 13 across Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 level.
