Match Preview: AFC Bournemouth U23 vs Brentford B

Bees face Cherries rematch at Vitality Stadium

30 August 2018

Tomorrow night, Friday 31 August, Brentford B face AFC Bournemouth U23 in a rematch of their last encounter just 10 days ago. It's a 7pm kick-off at the Vitality Stadium on the south coast and supporters are welcome to attend.

The Opposition

After playing previous seasons in The Central League, the Bournemouth youth squads have opted out of playing in a league system this season. Like Brentford B, they have opted to organise their own schedule and fly around Europe competing against teams from other countries.

Bournemouth Under-18s already followed this structure towards the end of last season, flying out to Italy for games against AC Milan and Sampdoria Under-19 squads during March.

This year they have entered two cup competitions; The Hampshire Senior Cup and the Premier League Cup. The PL Cup saw them advance all the way to the Last 16 last term, losing out to Newcastle 3-2 in March.

This year they have been drawn in Group C of the opening round, pitting them against; Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion and Burnley.

Before last Tuesday, Brentford B had played this squad twice, in August and November 2017. The first game ended in a 2-0 win for Brentford B, Herson Rodrigues Alves and Justin Shaibu scoring for The Bees. The second match was a 3-0 defeat for O'Connor's side; Connor Mahoney, Mikael Ndjoli and Sam Sherring on the scoresheet.

Last week, Marcus Forss and Reece Cole scored to send Brentford past their opponents with a 2-1 win. The full match report is online now, and is available to read here. Previous match highlights are also viewable right here.

Opposition Boss

In charge since January 2014, former Bournemouth and Wales player Carl Fletcher is the Head Coach of the youth squad. He was a midfielder in his career, making more than 400 appearances in league football. The 38-year-old's time was split mostly between Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Plymouth Argyle.

In 2012, he hung up his boots to focus on coaching. That was until he made a brief comeback for Barnet in the 2013/14 season. Since the end of that campaign, he has been on the staff at AFCB.

Brentford B

The Bees lost their opening game of the regular season, then won their second. All that after a pre-season that included completing the Three Peaks Challenge in England, Scotland and Wales.

The pre-season fixtures themselves saw them lose 2-1 to Southampton at Jersey Road. The two previous fixtures had also been narrow 1-0 defeats to both Oxford United and West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies deployed Gareth Barry, Sam Johnstone and Nigel Reo-Coker but only managed a single-goal victory in the West Midlands.

For this match, the B team will still be without Henrik Johansson and Jan Zamburek. Swedish winger Henrik is still out injured, while Czech midfielder Jan is away with an international training camp.
