It was a disappointing weekend for our four loanees as Carlisle United’s Play-Off dream came to an end while Walsall dropped deeper into relegation worry.
Jack Bonham played the full 90 minutes as Carlisle were held 1-1 at home by Luton Town, a result which saw The Hatters promoted. Danny Grainger’s early penalty gave The Cumbrians the lead but Olly Lee levelled midway through the second-half. The draw coupled with Coventry City’s win leaves Keith Curle’s side eight points outside the Play-Off places with just two games to play, the first of which is at Port Vale this coming Saturday.
Also in the fourth tier, Ilias Chatzitheodoridis played the full 90-minutes as Cheltenham Town were beaten by the odd goal in seven at Cambridge United. Mo Eisa scored twice for Gary Johnson’s side, with George Lloyd getting the other, but The Robins eventually went down to a late Barry Corr strike to remain 16th ahead of their home game against Coventry City at the weekend.
In Sky Bet League One, Justin Shaibu was a late substitute as Walsall edged closer to the drop zone after a single-goal defeat at promotion-chasing Scunthorpe United. The only goal came with 16 minutes to play as Ryan Yates headed home Conor Townsend’s cross. The Saddlers stay 19th after the defeat but now have just a one-point buffer above the bottom four. On Saturday fellow strugglers Northampton Town head to The Banks’s Stadium for a relegation six-pointer.
In Germany, DSC Arminia Bielefeld’s promotion hopes were dented after a goalless draw away at mid-table Eintracht Braunschweig on Friday night. Konstantin Kerschbaumer was among those to come close for DSC who, despite bossing the game, couldn’t find the elusive winner. Arminia stay fifth after the draw but are now five points off the pace with just three games to play.
