Brentford Women’s FC fell to a 3-0 opening day defeat at home to Hampton and Richmond Borough Ladies in the Greater London Women’s Football League Division One on Sunday lunchtime.
The first-half at Lampton School was one of few chances but those that were created fell the way of The Bees, and last season’s top scorer Dana Johnson in particular. The striker was brilliantly denied by the visiting keeper inside the opening ten minutes before seeing an effort turned behind via of combination of goalkeeper’s foot and post. However, the one real chance that Borough created in the opening 45 minutes saw them score: a ball through The Bees defence was calmly slotted home by the on-rushing striker.
The Bees continued to make the running after the interval and should have levelled midway through the half but Johnson sent her effort from 15 yards the wrong side of the post. That miss was punished shortly after as Hampton’s captain, who had just seen an effort spectacularly turned round the post by Brentford stopper Naomi Swift, picked up a loose ball on the half-way line, outpaced The Bees defence and fired past the helpless Swift. The scoreline was given added gloss in injury time as Hampton’s substitute was adjudged onside and fired across Swift to make it 3-0.
Brentford’s Development Team also went down to a battling 4-2 defeat at home to Denham United Ladies yesterday. The visitors struck twice in the first-half but The Bees halved that deficit after the break, Clare McKay with the goal. Denham added two more before Jodie Reid netted her first of the season late on to make the scoreline more reflective of the 90 minutes action.
