Brentford Women's FC bow out of SSE Women's FA Cup

Opening day defeats for both Bees teams on Sunday

4 September 2017

Brentford Women’s FC were knocked out of the SSE Women’s FA Cup on Sunday after a 7-1 defeat at Lampton School against Chesham United. Gemma Fraser scored four for the visitors, including three that would grace a much higher stage than the First Qualifying Round, as United eased through on a damp afternoon in West London.

The result doesn’t in any way tell the story of a game which saw Craig Brown’s side provide a much sterner test for their visitors than they did at the same stage 12 months ago. United, who play two divisions above The Bees, created the better chances in an even opening period but failed to test Naomi Swift in the Brentford goal. However, they did take the lead after 25 minutes as Natalie Adams’ low shot crept under Swift and into the net. It was 2-0 a minute later as Fraser’s sweet half-volley from 20 yards flew into the top corner.

Kirsty Gladwin continued the theme of fine-strikes as she made it three shortly before the break, sending a 30-yard effort into the top corner. Fraser grabbed her second on the stroke of half-time, turning home from close range. The Bees pulled one back at the start of the second-half as a miscommunication in the Chesham backline saw United’s centre-back turn in to her own net. Brown’s side couldn’t build on that goal as Fraser crashed in her hat-trick off the post before Barbara Balint raced clear and chipped home a sixth as The Bees chased the game. It was left to Fraser to end the scoring in the dying seconds with a deft lob from outside the box.

Brentford Development also suffered an opening day defeat as they were beaten 5-1 by Hampstead Development also at Lampton School. Sarah Garlick scored twice with Jameela Barrett, Shivani Bedi, and Charley Lebetkin adding the others. Geraldine Burgess was on target for The Bees, deftly diverting Jodie Reid’s low cross past the Hampstead keeper.

Both sides are in action again next Sunday with the First-Team hosting Hampton and Richmond Borough in the Greater London Women’s Football League Division One while Denham United travel to Lampton School to face the Development team.
