Sheffield Wednesday vs Brentford
Sky Bet Championship
After falling at the second-to-last hurdle in May's Play-Offs, Sheffield Wednesday headed into this season as one of the Sky Bet Championhip promotion favourites. So far, however, they have struggled to recapture the form of last season although Saturday's 3-1 victory at home to Nottingham Forest has lifted the mood in the blue half of the Steel City. That victory was the first for Carlos Carvalhal's side on home soil in the league this season, and only their second of the Championship campaign.
Carvahal's big-name squad was supplemented during the summer with the permanent arrivals of George Boyd and Joost van Aken and the loan captures of Frederico Venancio, Jacob Butterfield, and Jordan Rhodes. The Owls are without midfielder Glenn Loovens for tonight's game and are also sweating on the fitness of Kieran Lee, Jack Hunt, Steven Fletcher, and Ross Wallace following Saturday's win.
After almost three years away from the game, Carlos Carvalhal joined Wednesday in June 2015, and is now the third longest serving manager in the Championship. The 51-year-old spent the majority of his playing career as a defender with his hometown club SC Braga, making more than 100 appearances for The Archbishops. He also had spells with Porto, Beira-Mar and Tirense before retiring, aged 32.
This is Carvalhal's 15th club management job, following spells with Sporting Lisbon, CF Belenenses and SC Braga in his native Portugal. His last position was at Turkish giants Besiktas, where he acted as caretaker manager. His two full seasons at Hillsborough have seen him lead The Owls to the Play-Offs on both occasions: losing out to Hull City in the 2015/16 Final and Huddersfield Town in last year's Semi-Final.
