Foot in Both Camps: Norwich City

A look at some of the common connections between The Bees and The Canaries

19 September 2017

A look through the current Norwich City squad shows just one player who has links to the Brentford squad, Alex Pritchard.

The attacking midfielder enjoyed a fruitful season-long loan at Griffin Park in 2014/15, scoring 12 goals in 45 appearances as Mark Warburton’s side reached the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs. After a loan spell at West Bromwich Albion the following season, Pritchard joined The Canaries last summer. His debut season saw him net six times in 19 starts but this season has been ruined so far by an ankle injury picked up in pre-season which will keep him out until at least November.

Another player with connections between the two sides missing tonight’s game with an ankle injury is Bees midfielder Sergi Canos who endured a difficult six-month spell in East Anglia last season. Following a summer move from Liverpool, Sergi made just six competitive appearances under then boss Alex Neil before returning to Griffin Park on Deadline Day in January.

Looking further back in time two members of our 1991/92 Division Three promotion winning side have strong links to tonight’s opponents. Midfielder Simon Ratcliffe spent two years with The Canaries in the top flight between 1987 and 1989 before moving to Griffin Park. With The Bees, Simon racked up 268 appearances and 16 goals over six years, winning promotion in 1992 and making the Play-Offs again in 1995.

Another of that promotion winning team to have spent time at Carrow Road is Chris Hughton. The left-back took over the position at the end of the promotion run-in in 1992 and went on to make 41 appearances in just under a year with The Bees. He retired into coaching with Tottenham Hotspur before taking over as City manager in 2012. He led The Canaries to an 11th-place finish in the Premier League during his first season but was sacked less than a year later with Norwich battling relegation again.

Others to have worn the colours of both teams include Tom Adeyemi, Carl Cort, Efan Ekoku, Lewis Grabban, Stuart Nelson, Gerry Peyton, and Robert Taylor.
