Familar Faces: Derby County

A look at the links between us and tonight's visitors

26 September 2017

The path between Griffin and Pride Park has been a seldom trodden one over the years with none of the current Derby County playing or coaching staff having a connection with The Bees.

There are, however, players in both teams who have good memories of games against the other with Josh Clarke making his Brentford debut against The Rams back in 2013 while Chris Martin has scored six times against The Bees in ten games.

Delving back into the archives, the man with the most history for both clubs is, without doubt, Dave McCulloch. The Scottish striker joined The Bees from Hearts in November 1935 as Harry Curtis’ side lay bottom of Division One. Over the next six months he scored 26 goals in 26 games to fire The Bees to our highest ever league finish of fifth in the top tier. The following two seasons saw McCulloch net 33 and 29 goals respectively as sixth-placed finishes were secured on both occasions.

A year later and it was Derby County who were finishing sixth on account of the Scots' 16 league goals in 31 games. Described at the time as having “everything the complete centre-forward should have”, McCulloch sits fifth in our all-time scoring chart and has the best goals per game ratio of anyone in the top ten after striking 90 times in just 124 games.

In more recent times, Deon Burton spent six years, most of them in the Premier League, with The Rams between 1997 and 2003, scoring 31 goals in 143 games. The Jamaican international also enjoyed a fruitful season at Griffin Park under Martin Allen, scoring ten goals as we reached the League One Play-Offs and FA Cup Fifth Round. Others to have represented both include Darren Powell, DJ Campbell, and Dean Holdsworth.

Tickets for tonight's game will be on sale up to kick-off from just £28 adults, £22 seniors, £20 Young Persons, and £6 Juniors.
