Behind The Gloves

Meet Ricky Heavens: the Brentford fan looking to make a name for himself in the boxing ring.

11 November 2017

Ahead of his successful bout at the York Hall in September, Park Life's Nick Bruzon caught up with young boxer, and Brentford fan, Ricky Heavens to ask just who is the young contender, why should we get behind him and what is his Brentford connection?

I read a ‘tweet’ from one football fan saying: “Boxing is simple, just punch your opponent harder than he punches you. Let's not pretend there's any more to it than that.” One would suggest there’s certainly more to it than this simplification?

I read that tweet as well. When people say things like this it really does annoy me! I mean, at only 19 I've already dedicated 11 years of my life learning, watching and training. I've spent hours upon hours grafting away in the gym to make just the slightest of improvement, so to hear things like this makes me wonder how arrogant people can be.

Many of us will never have seen live Boxing before. Describe what it will be like at the iconic York Hall?

For those who have never been I would describe York Hall on fight night as very similar to the Ealing Road stand. Everyone's packed in real tight and are all on their feet singing their hearts out. Small hall boxing usually has a great atmosphere. York Hall is also the home of British boxing. Most of the greats have boxed there early in their careers.

Why Brentford?

I don't really know what it is. I started going to Griffin Park on matchdays years ago now and just fell in love. It's not all rich businessmen and £50mil players - it's a family down there! And we have the best supporters around. The loyalty I've been shown from the Bees fans has been unbelievable.

From what you’ve seen of the Bees in action, who do you think would have the best chance of making it in the ring?

Currently I'd say Harlee Dean could be decent! Just an all-round beast, ain't he? I fancy Jota to be decent as well as he's just the King.

What is your message to Brentford fans?

My messages to Brentford fans is: You guys are all amazing. To think our club supports not just its team but our fellow fans is unbelievable. I want to thank everyone who has been supporting me recently and getting involved with my career. YOU BEES!

Ricky is back in action at the York Hall on Saturday 25 November, taking on Daniel Spencer. Tickets for the evening's bouts, which ends with Southern Area Cruiserweight champion Wadi Camacho defending his crowd against Cruiserweight prospect Jose Lopes, are available here
