Ollie Watkins was disappointed with Brentford’s 2-0 defeat to Cardiff on Saturday afternoon. The winger spoke to iFollow after the final whistle at The Cardiff City Stadium.
“Definitely disappointed,” he said. “I thought we had a sloppy start. We were lucky not to go a goal down in the first five minutes, if it wasn’t for [Daniel] Bentley’s save on the line.
“We started off sloppy and overall today we’ve not been good enough.”
Asked about the main difference between the two teams out there, Ollie said: “We are the better team. I think everyone knew that going into the game, including Cardiff. They went man for man and matched us up. They played the ball in behind and got people behind it. Today we just weren’t good enough.
“We’ve had a double effort from Sergi [Canós] and Lasse [Vibe], the ball is cleared off the line twice. You look at that and kind of think that it’s not going to be our day. We’ve missed chances and it’s come back to bite us today.”
Throughout the match, Brentford’s travelling set of fans were behind the team. This is something Ollie acknowledged has been a great part of football on the road this term.
“The fans are always supportive and we’ve been on a great run previous to this. It was nine games and we’ve had a little blip here, hopefully we can correct it Tuesday. We’ve got a great squad, everyone knows what we are capable of. We’ve got to look past this now, keep our heads up and go again.
“We’ve got a Tuesday game and a weekend game after that. That’s good for us, hopefully we can go out and correct it straight away on Tuesday.”
Ollie signed off by summing up his immediate thoughts after the match.
“I’m still thinking about today and what I could have done better, what the team could have done better. All the lads there are hungry and want to go again Tuesday after some of he comments in the dressing room. We know what we need to do, we just need to put it right.”
