Kamohelo Mokotjo's World Cup hopes ended on Friday

South Africa beaten by Senegal in Polokwane

11 November 2017

A 2-0 defeat at home to Senegal last night ended South Africa's 2018 FIFA World Cup hopes and guaranteed a place in Russia for the Lions of Teranga.

Kamohelo Mokotjo played the full 90 minutes, earning his seventh cap, at the Peter Mokaba Stadium with both goals coming in the first-half. Bafana Bafana dominated the game in terms of chances but the away side netted through West Ham striker Diafra Sakho after 12 minutes and then an unfortunate Thamsanqa Mkhize own-goal made it 2-0 seven minutes from the break.

Defeat ended South Africa's chances of making it to Russia next summer but the two sides meet again in the final group game at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor in Dakar on Tuesday.

Another Brentford player has a chance to take a big step towards qualifying for next summer's World Cup tonight as Andreas Bjelland and Denmark take on Republic of Ireland in the first-leg of their Play-Off in Copenhagen.
