Jota’s wonder-strike in the 3-1 win over local rivals Queens Park Rangers last month was the runaway winner of the 2016/17 Brentford FC Goal of the Season award at tonight’s Player of the Year Awards Dinner. The Spaniard netted The Bees third as a first double over Rangers in more than 50 years was confirmed. With his first touch the winger controlled Nico Yennaris’s crossfield ball past defender Jake Bidwell, before cutting inside Joel Lynch with his second touch, and then firing under Alex Smithies with his third.
Jota’s goal picked up more than two-thirds of the votes beating Nico Yennaris’ long-range strike against Birmingham City into second-place and Josh Clarke’s first goal for the club in the 4-1 win over Reading into third. The award was presented by Leoline Travel, one of the sponsors of tonight’s event at the Radisson Blu Edwardian, Heathrow.
The Spanish winger has been in sensational form since returning from a year-long loan spell with Eibar in January. In 21 league games the 25-year-old has netted 12 goals and contributed five assists, which is more than any other player in the second tier in 2017. He netted his first Brentford hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Rotherham United in February, a month where he was also nominated for the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month Award.
