International Round-Up: John Egan makes Ireland debut

29 March 2017

Bees defender plays an hour in friendly defeat to Iceland

John Egan earned his first full cap for the Republic of Ireland last night in their 1-0 defeat to Iceland at The Aviva Stadium. The 24-year-old defender started the match against the European Championship Quarter-Finalists as Martin O'Neill used the match to take a look at some newer members of his squad.

Despite picking up a knock to the head early on, John put in an assured performance during his hour on the pitch. The only goal of the match came after 21 minutes as Bristol City's Hordur Magnusson curled home an exquisite free-kick after Egan's foul on Kjartan Henry Finnbogason.

John had been capped at Under-17, Under-19, and Under-21 level but had to wait for his first full cap having watched Friday's World Cup Qualifying draw with Wales from the bench.
