Kevin O'Connor's side beat Wolves in friendly match at Griffin Park
Goals from Chris Mepham and Justin Shaibu ensured that Brentford B got the better of their counterparts from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a behind closed doors friendly at Griffin Park this afternoon.
Both sides used this afternoon’s fixture, coming in the midst of the international break, to give a number of first-team players a run out. Josh Clarke, Yoann Barbet, and Jack Bonham all started for Kevin O’Connor’s Bees while Mike Williamson, Richard Stearman, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Dominic Iorfa, and Jack Price were involved for the visitors.
The Bees found it difficult to create openings early on and fell behind after a quarter of an hour as Bright Enobakhare collected a precision through ball and rolled under Bonham from eight yards. The visitors’ lead didn’t last long, seven minutes to be precise, before a deep Reece Cole corner found Mepham and his powerful header was too strong for Andy Lonergan to keep out.
Chances remained at a premium until the stroke of half-time when Mepham proved his worth at the other end of the pitch, denying Enobakhare a certain second with a crucial block inside the six-yard box after the Wolves’ man had beaten three men on a mazy run into the box.
The pattern of the first-half continued into the early stages of the second with Wolves pressing but The Bees looking dangerous when in possession. And so it proved on the hour as Brentford took the lead: Cole’s perfectly weighted pass inside the right-channel allowed Shaibu to beat Borthwick-Jackson to the ball and he finished clinically across Lonergan from ten yards.
Herson Alves had the best chance to extend the lead for The Bees but he couldn’t sort his feet out in time to convert Shaibu’s low cross. As the match drew towards its conclusion the visitor took command but couldn’t find a way past Bonham or the resolute Brentford backline as they held on to complete the victory.
