Brentford's B Team central defender Emmanuel Onariase has signed a new contract. The 20-year-old put pen to paper on a new two-year deal today, Thursday 22 June, and will return to pre-season training with the rest of the Brentford B squad tomorrow. The defender, known as Manny, has returned to The Bees after a successful loan spell at Cheltenham Town last season and may go back out on loan before the start of the 2017/18 campaign.
Manny joined The Bees from West Ham United for an undisclosed fee at the start of 2016. The central defender signed an 18-month contract after a successful trial having been at West Ham since he was 12. Manny played 15 games for Brentford B this season, 14 from the start, and was also named as a substitute for three Sky Bet Championship matches in the autumn. In a six-month loan at Cheltenham he played 24 matches, 22 of them as the Gloucestershire side battled to avoid relegation from the league. He also scored his first goal in professional football.
Rob Rowan, Head of Football Operations, said: “It was a good season for Manny last year. He trained a lot with our First Team and featured on the bench against Derby, QPR and Fulham. Spending the second half of the season on loan at Cheltenham was a brilliant experience for him professional and personally, Cheltenham were in a relegation battle where every game was a six-pointer, therefore, he had to mature and recover from mistakes very quickly.
“I’ve had a good chat with Manny and we will be looking for him to go out on loan again. There is some interest in him so it’s most likely he will depart in the coming weeks but it’s something we both believe will help him longer term.”
All new 2017/18 Training Wear from adidas, as worn by Manny and the whole Brentford FC squad, is available now from the Club both online and in store.
