There were good results but little time on the pitch for four Brentford players with their international teams in action yesterday. Andreas Bjelland, Henrik Dalsgaard and Lase Vibe were all with the Danish squad for a World Cup qualifier away to Kazakhstan while B Team goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe was with the England squad in the Toulon Tournament final. Both teams got wins but no Brentford player added to their caps total.
Ellery will be bringing a medal back from his first England tournament. The 17-year-old was an unused substitute as England played Ivory Coast in the final. The team – officially an Under-20 side but containing many younger players – had won four games in a row to reach the final and Ellery had played in one match. David Brooks put England ahead but Ivory Coast levelled in the dying seconds. That meant a penalty shoot-out and England took the trophy with a 5-3 win. Ellery ends the tournament with one Under-20 cap to add to three he has at Under-18 level.
In Kazakhstan, Henrik won his first international cap as a Brentford player as Denmark got an important win. Nicola Jørgensen and Christian Eriksen put Denmark 2-0 up and although the hosts pulled one back, a goal from Kasper Dolberg secured the win. Henrik came on just after the third goal to play the final eight minutes, earn his fourth cap and ensure Denmark got the win. The Danes now have ten points from six games and are in with a chance of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.
