The week in football

The news from Griffin Park and the world of football over the past seven days

24 July 2017

Brentford news

Two more new faces arrived at Griffin Park last week with Exeter City attacker Ollie Watkins agreeing a four-year contract after leaving St James Park and FC Nordsjaelland attacker Emiliano Marcondes signing a pre-contract agreement to join The Bees in January on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Having returned from the pre-season Training Camp in France last weekend, The Bees edged a seven-goal thriller at Oxford United on Wednesday night. Florian Jozefzoon, Lasse Vibe, Reece Cole, and Sergi Canos got the goals as Dean Smith’s side came from 3-2 down to win it late on.

Vibe then made it three in three by netting in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Premier League side Southampton. Charlie Austin’s double looked to be giving The Saints the win until Fraser Forster’s howler gifted Josh Clarke a deserved late leveller.

The B Team continued their impressive start to the campaign by thrashing Benfica B 6-0 in Portugal on Wednesday: Marcus Forss struck four, including a 20 minute first-half hat-trick, with Zain Westbrooke and Jan Novak completing the scoring. Then on Saturday, Ali Coote and Justin Shaibu were on target as Kevin O’Connor’s side beat a Chelsea XI 2-1 at Cobham.

Garry Monk continues to assemble his squad at Middlesbrough after adding Britt Assombalonga and Darren Randolph to the group at The Riverside Stadium for a reported near £20 million.

Another team who have been busy this week have been Hull City who completed the free signing of Frazier Campbell with Eldin Jakupovic and Ahmed Elmohamady departing for Leicester City and Aston Villa respectively. City also lost the services of defender Andrew Robertson to Liverpool with Kevin Stewart heading in the other direction.

Elsewhere in the second tier, Vito Mannone swapped Sunderland for Reading to replace the departing Ali Al-Habsi. Jacob Murphy completed his move from Norwich City to Newcastle United while Christopher Samba and Glenn Whelan joined Steve Bruce at Aston Villa.

Football news

Manchester City continue to be the Premier League’s big spenders after splashing out £27 million on Real Madrid defender Danilo. Another departure from the Bernabeu this week was Alvaro Morata who headed to Chelsea for a reported £60 million.

England goalkeeper Joe Hart will be a West Ham player this campaign after agreeing a season-long loan deal. Another player to move to Olympic Stadium this week was Marco Arnautovic who left Stoke City in a deal which could be worth £25 million.

Former Brentford loanee Wojciech Szczesny left Arsenal after eight years in North London for Juventus while the week’s other major move saw Kurt Zouma sign a new six-year deal at Chelsea before moving to Stoke City on a season-long loan.
