Opposition Preview

An eighth-placed finish and a Wembley trip from the EFL Cup final wasn't enough to see Claude Puel maintain his job on the South Coast after just a year in charge. It was the same old story for The Saints in the summer with big-money departures in the shape of Victor Wanyama, Graziano Pelle, and Sadio Mane.

The loss of three key players meant Southampton failed to qualify from their Europa League group but they fared better domestically. A 2-0 aggregate win over Liverpool set up a Wembley date with Manchester United who, on the day ran out 3-2 winners. After that defeat in February, The Saints won just four of their final 13 games to spell the end of Puel's tenure at St Mary's.

This summer has already seen Jay Rodriguez head to West Bromwich Albion for a reported £12 million with Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan the only major arrival.

The Manager

Mauricio Pellegrino enjoyed a successful playing career in both his native Argentina and then Spain before stepping into the world of coaching in 2012. The central defender came through the ranks with Velez Sarsfield and spent a decade with the club winning four Primeira División championships and the 1994 Intercontinental and Libertadores Cups. After a loan spell at Barcelona he joined Valencia, winning two La Liga titles and the 2004 UEFA Cup.

Mauricio hung up his boots after unsuccessful spells with Liverpool and Alaves going on to take coaching roles at Valencia B, Liverpool, and Inter Milan. His first taste of management lasted just six months before he was sacked at Valencia. He returned to Argentina and enjoyed moderate success with Estudiantes and Independiente before taking over at Alaves last June. He led the newly-promoted side to the Copa Del Rey final, where they lost to Barcelona, ahead of this summer's move to The Saints.
