10 things you might not know about Neal Maupay

Get to know our new French attacker

16 July 2017

Neal Maupay became our fourth summer signing when he joined from Saint-Etienne on Friday night, signing a four-year contract at Griffin Park. Here's some things you might not know about our new man

-       Neal Maupay was born on 14 August 1996 in Versailles, on the outskirts of Paris, to a French father and Argentinian mother.

-       He spent five years with US Valbonne SA before joining Nice as an 11-year-old in 2007.

-       After five years with OGC’s juniors, he turned pro and was handed his professional debut by Claude Puel against Brest on 15 September 2012 aged 16 and 32 days, making him the fourth youngest player in Ligue 1 history.

-       Neal’s first goal was a dying-seconds winner in a 3-2 victory over Evian on 15 December 2012, which made him the second youngest goalscorer ever in Ligue 1. He went on to net four goals in 19 games during his debut season.

-       Over the following two seasons he made 34 appearances for OGC in all competitions, netting five goals before joining Saint-Etienne on a four-year deal in the summer of 2015.

-       Neal contributed an assist on his debut in a 1-0 win over FC Lorient but again found his gametime limited in the top division starting just nine games.

-       Last year Neal moved on a season-long loan to Ligue 2 side Stade Brestois 29. He scored four goals in his first five games for the club and had reached double figures by early December.

-       He became a hero on the terraces at Brest for his goals. He won the Goal of the Week twice in a row as Brest topped the table heading into February. However, a knee injury put a halt to his season and in his absence the goals dried up as Brest missed out on promotion on the final day of the season.

-       Neal has played for France at Under-16, Under-17, Under-19, and Under-21 levels scoring 16 goals in 35 games across the age groups.

-       In total, Neal has scored 23 goals in 106 games in all competitions.
