Late winner from substitute Raphael Assibey-Mensah seals victory.
Substitute Raphael Assibey-Mensah provided a late bright spot to Brentford's B Team friendly at Stevenage. It was a scrappy game in Hertfordshire but his right foot shot from a Zain Westbrooke through ball beat Boro goalkeeper Chris Day.
The home side had the lion’s share of the opening chances, but Brentford forced an opening in the 20th minute; Danny Parish heading narrowly wide from an Ilias Chatzitheodoridis left wing cross.
However, two minutes later, Brentford went ahead. The Greek left back was fouled just outside the box and Reece Cole repeated his trick against Reading earlier this season with a fabulous long range dead ball that left Day groping for thin air.
Cole and James Ferry forced more openings but Stevenage equalised from the penalty spot in the 39th minute, given for a foul by Chris Mepham, and the two sides went into the break level. The second half was devoid of any real pressure by either team, Cole’ shot was deflected for a corner and Westbrooke’s lunge forced a save from Day.
By this time, Assibey-Mensah had replaced Rio up front. He had a shot saved in the 79th minute and Parish blasted over shortly afterwards. Assibey-Mensah again had a chance to win the game but repaid Kevin O’Connor’s decision to send him on when the German coolly slotted home with two minutes left past the advancing Day.
