"I'm looking forward to hopefully being successful"

John Egan talks about his new deal at Griffin Park

Defender John Egan revealed his pride at signing a new three-and-a-half-year deal with Brentford when he sat down with Bees Player for the first time since putting pen to paper on the contract extension.

The Irishman revealed the reasoning behind agreeing the deal that will see him play at Griffin Park through to the summer of 2020.

"It's great," said John. "I've enjoyed my time here so far, played a lot of games. I really enjoy playing with the lads and the gaffer's been good to me.

"I'm happy here, I'm enjoying my football and it's great to extend my contract by another year. I'm looking forward to hopefully being successful.

"I came here in the summer and played pretty much every game. They've obviously been happy with me and so I see this as a good reward. I'm delighted to be out on the pitch, put in some good performances and it's good that they have been recognised."

The 24-year-old also shared some of his thoughts on the season so far, and how much he is enjoying life as a Championship player after stepping up from League One in the summer.

"We'd like to be higher in the table I think," said John. "There were a lot of games we dominated that we didn't take advantage of or pick up the three points. Looking back at a few games, we could have picked up a few more points and be closer to the play-offs.

"I think the standard [in the Championship] is a lot higher here. Day in day out you're training with better players and playing against better players week in week out so it improves you a lot.

"Training here has been great, the lads are always at it 100 per cent. It really brings you on as a player when you're being tested every day and I feel like I've improved a lot since I came here. I'm just looking to keep improving now and I'm happy to sign a new deal."
