An injury time goal denied Brentford Women’s FC a well-deserved friendly victory over their rivals from QPR Development this afternoon at Swift Road.
In new Head Coach Craig Brown’s first game in charge, The Bees, up against a team who play a division above them, started brightly and took an early lead through last season’s top scorer Dana Johnson.
Rangers equalised from the penalty spot midway through the half but again Johnson showed the form that saw her net 13 times in 15 appearances last season to make it 2-1 following fine work by Kelly Mackay in the midfield. However, the first-half scoring wasn’t done yet as QPR levelled for a second time with virtually the last kick.
The Bees continued to make the running after the break and took the lead once more: Jodie Reid converting Shannon Read’s near post cross. Johnson could have settled the game heading into the final 20 minutes, but couldn’t find a way past Rangers’ goalkeeper. And so, in the third minute of added time, QPR were able to snatch a scarcely-deserved draw as their striker headed home a looping cross from close range.
Brown’s side have one more friendly match ahead of the new season which begins with a Women’s FA Cup tie at home to Chesham United on Sunday 3 September at Lampton School.
