Taking a brief spell away from an action-packed Family Day at Griffin Park on Monday 31 July, midfielder Ryan Woods spoke of his delight at being able to give back to loyal Bees supporters.
“It’s a great event,” Ryan told brentfordfc.com. “You’ve only got to look at the kids’ faces to see that it means the world to them; we’re happy to make them happy.
“I remember being in their position and meeting my heroes so it’s pleasing to be able to contribute to a day like this”.
With Celta Vigo’s visit to Griffin Park last weekend the final chapter in a “very tough” pre-season schedule, the former Shrewsbury Town man was adamant that the team is fully prepared for the trip to Bramall Lane: “We’re ready for Saturday. We’re stronger than I’ve ever known us at this stage and I know a lot of the fans are saying the same thing. We need to make sure that we take what we’ve done in pre-season and apply it to the first game of the season; hopefully that’ll be enough to earn us the three points.
Whilst he admitted that there will be a “few disappointed players” come 2pm on Saturday, Ryan – like his fellow midfielder Nico Yennaris – stressed the importance of competition for places over the course of a gruelling Championship campaign.
“The five or six of us fighting it out for a slot in central midfield all offer something different, so it could be a case of ‘horses for courses’ throughout the season. We’ve got four days left to impress the manager; hopefully I’m in that team for the game”.
