It was a case of one in and one out for our two loanees in the Carabao Cup as Tom Field’s Bradford City debut ended in a narrow defeat to Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers but Jack Bonham and Carlisle United made progress with a 2-1 home win over Fleetwood Town.
Tom, who only completed his loan move on Monday, was thrown straight into Stuart McCall’s Bantams’ line-up as they prepared to welcome their fellow League One side to Valley Parade. It was the visitors who started better and led after just eight minutes, Alfie May with the goal. Dominic Poleon levelled for City before the break but they were then reduced to ten-men on the hour, captain Romain Vincelot shown a straight red for a wild lunge. Rodney Kongolo restored Rovers lead ten minutes later, shortly before Tom was withdrawn, only for substitute Alex Jones to level for a second time with six minutes to go. That didn’t prove to be the end of the scoring as Ben Whiteman netted in the dying seconds to secure Rovers’ progression to Round Two once and for all.
At Highbury, Jack made a number of crucial saves as Carlisle United got the better of their higher division opponents thanks to an extra-time goal from substitute Tom Miller. His namesake Shaun gave United a first-half lead but Uwe Rosler’s Fleetwood levelled thanks to Jordy Hiwula midway through the second-half. Neither side could find a winner inside the 90 minutes but Miller’s 101st minute header eventually separated the teams and ensured Carlisle will join Brentford in Thursday’s Second Round draw.
