John Egan called up to provisional Ireland squad

Defender included in 39-man squad for World Cup Qualifiers

14 August 2017

John Egan has been included in the provisional Republic of Ireland squad for next month's two crucial 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Martin O’Neill’s side travel to Tblisi on Saturday 2 September for a match against Georgia, kick-off 8pm local time, before hosting Serbia at The Aviva Stadium on Tuesday 5 September, 7.45pm kick-off.

Georgia are currently fifth in Group D with four games to go, having drawn three and lost three of their six games so far. The game at The Aviva the following Tuesday sees the unbeaten top two in the group go head to head. With only the group winners guaranteed a place at next summer’s World Cup, victory for either side would go a long way to booking their spot in Russia.

John made his Republic of Ireland bow in March against Iceland and earned his second cap in June when the Boys in Green travelled to New York for a friendly against Mexico. John made 37 appearances during his debut season at Griffin Park, scoring four goals, and netted his first goal of the new campaign in Saturday’s 4-3 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Griffin Park.
