Sergi Canos previews Tuesday’s Sky Bet Championship encounter against Leeds United
Brentford winger Sergi Canos feels that tomorrow’s visit from promotion chasing Leeds United is a perfect chance for The Bees to show that they have what it takes to mix it with the best the Sky Bet Championship has to offer. The Bees head into the game having scored seven in winning their last two matches and Sergi believes that a win over fifth placed United would be another big boost for the group.
“We can take a lot of confidence into tomorrow because we have played well against the teams that are at the top of the table,” said Sergi, speaking to Bees Player ahead of the match. “Leeds are a big team and a big club so we are really looking forward to playing against them. Tomorrow will be a good game to show everyone that we can be in those Play-Off places. We could be higher but the season has been how it has been. We are ten points behind the Play-Offs and if we can beat Leeds tomorrow that will give huge confidence to the team. The gaffer set a target to beat last season’s total and we are trying to get to that target. We just want to enjoy ourselves now and play as well as we can.”
After netting his first two goals back in a Bees shirt at Burton Albion before the international break, Sergi added his third in two games with the opener in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Bristol City. Sergi admitted that it was a brilliant feeling to be back scoring at Griffin Park, especially as it set the team on their way to the three points.
“It was really good because my family and friends were in the crowd,” said Sergi. “I don’t know how to describe my first goal back at Griffin Park but I think the celebration spoke for themselves. Whoever scores or gets the assists the most important thing is about the team and the three points. We managed the game and I don’t think that they had a lot of chances in the first-half. We killed the game in the first-half and it was a great performance.
Since his return to Brentford in late January, the 20-year-old winger has featured in all 11 of The Bees games, during which time Dean Smith’s side have scored 25 goals. Given his run in the team, Sergi feels that he is approaching full sharpness and revealed that it has been a joy to be involved in the football the team has been playing recently.
“I feel very good and I feel ready to play,” said Sergi. “I have been waiting for this since before Christmas. Then I wasn’t playing but now I am playing and helping the team which is the most important thing. I said it before and I’ll say it again now but it is a fun team to play in. We are attacking all the time: the defenders are attacking, the midfielders are attacking and the attackers are attacking. That is our biggest threat that we want to attack and score goals.
