Dean reflects on tonight’s 2-0 win over Leeds United at Griffin Park
Brentford Head Coach Dean Smith said his young team looked like a group of men tonight as they made it three wins from three with an excellent 2-0 victory over high-flying Leeds United. The Bees were on the front foot from the off and scored twice in a dominant first-half through Romaine Sawyers and Lasse Vibe. United came back into the game more in the second period but The Bees stood strong to record back to back 2-0 home wins.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match Dean said: “It was an excellent night’s work against a very good team. We had to battle in the second-half but our composure and quality on the ball in the first-half was excellent. I asked the lads to continue that but Leeds made it hard as they were trying to get something out of the game. Second-half we were very professional. It is a big marker they have laid down tonight. It is a tough league to go Saturday to Tuesday and perform like they did. The Leeds players were complementary to me as they were coming off the pitch at the end. They looked like a group of men tonight. For a squad that is relatively young in the Championship that’s high praise. The clean sheet is also pleasing because Chris Wood has been on fire all season and scoring goals for fun. Our two centre-backs were excellent tonight in dealing with him but it was a whole team performance.”
Romaine Sawyers fired The Bees ahead after 18 minutes with a fine first-time effort after Rob Green had denied Sergi Canos and Lasse Vibe pounced to make it two after the former England keeper had again denied Canos. Tonight’s strike was Romaine’s first league goal at Griffin Park and Dean was delighted to see him, and Vibe, on the scoresheet.
“They put us under a little bit of pressure and we broke for the first,” said Dean. “It was a great save to deny Sergi Canos but a great strike from Romaine Sawyers. I am so pleased for Romaine because people have been talking about if he is quite up to the standard yet but his last two performances have shown that he is there. He needs more of those goals. I rested Konstantin Kerschbaumer tonight and put Nico Yennaris in there and he was involved for the second. It was a great save from Sergi and Lasse Vibe did what he has been doing. He runs tirelessly and he deserves any goal, let alone one from three yards.”
Before tonight The Bees had only managed to beat one of the current top six in 2017 despite a number of impressive performances against the league’s Play-Off contenders. Dean felt it was nice to finally get what they deserved from a game against a side in the top six.
“In the last couple of games we hadn’t fared well performance wise against the teams that had been at the bottom of the league,” said Dean. “However, we were very good against Bristol City on Saturday and we performed well again tonight and got the result. It was a thoroughly deserved result. I felt we should have won against Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion and shouldn’t have lost against Huddersfield Town. There are always some that you look back on that you have left out there but tonight is as pleasing as it gets.”
