B Team lose shoot-out to African visitors
Brentford lost 4-3 on penalties to the Right To Dream Academy after a 1-1 after 90 minutes. Jan Novak and Joe Hardy’s spot kicks were saved after Justin Shaibu had levelled things up in normal time.
The Right To Dream Academy is a centre of excellence based in Ghana, West Africa and the visitors took on a full strength B Team in a behind closed doors friendly, although Head Coach Kevin O’Connor preferred Dimi Kyriatzis in goal to Ellery Balcomble, who was benched.
It was a scrappy performance from the hosts, who could not get their crisp short passing game going in blustery conditions. Fielding two trialists, Hardy led the attack for Brentford but he was starved of service throughout the match.
Reece Cole almost produced his trademark long-range free-kick from well outside the penalty area but the visitors goalkeeper did extremely well to push the ball round the post. Two minutes later, Cole’s corner kick gave Jarvis Edobor the opportunity to open the scoring but his effort was cleared.
Against the run of play, Right To Dream took the lead seven minutes before the break, goalkeeper Kyriatzis was given no chance against a thunderous shot from around 25 yards out.
After the break, Brentford struggled to get any sort of rhythm, which allowed the visitors to create openings. However in the 59th minute Brentford equalised - Mepham’s header from a Cole corner was helped on by Shaibu, who had only just come on as substitute for Marc Rio a minute earlier.
That should have been the platform for Brentford to win the game but the allowed the visitors to earn a draw in normal time. A penalty competition at the end saw Cole, Mepham and substitute Zain Westbrooke spot kicks converted, but Hardy and Novak’s efforts were saved, and Right To Dream earned their win on the final scheduled kick.
