Bees backing campaign to encourage smokers to quit for good
Brentford FC have shown their support for One You Hounslow and Stoptober - the 28-day campaign from Public Health England that encourages and supports smokers across the country to quit smoking for good.
One You Hounslow health advisors were at Brentford FC’s match with Wigan Athletic last Saturday at Griffin Park and had young player Ilias Chatzitheodoridis on hand to speak to fans about the stop smoking support that is on offer for them in the borough.
Mark Devlin, Brentford FC Chief Executive, said: “Everyone is aware of the damage smoking can do and the benefits of stopping. We consider ourselves an important part of the local community so anything we can do to improve the health of local residents we will do. We hope it was useful for One You Hounslow and the Stoptober campaign and that our fans we able to pick up some information that may help them quit smoking.”
Brentford FC’s Football in the Community Programme, established in 1987, was amongst the pioneering programmes aimed at engaging football clubs with their communities.
Brentford FC Community Sports Trust, five time-winners of the Football League Community Club of the Year award, employs 29 contracted staff and 35 sessional coaches. They deliver 32 sports across 4 key areas - sports participation, health, education and social inclusion.
Jennifer Banks-Smith, health improvement manager for One You Hounslow said: “With the help of the Brentford FC team we were able to reach football fans in the Hounslow community and let them know about the benefits of quitting for Stoptober and the help our One You Hounslow service can offer them.”
She added: “Football fans can often be leading unhealthy lifestyles, especially when it comes to smoking. However, by teaming up with the football players about the support that One You Hounslow offers, Brentford FC gave us a fantastic platform to send out a positive message that will hopefully encourage local fans to give up smoking.”
