Bees wrap up fifth win in six league matches
Brentford Women’s FC kept up the pressure at the top of the Greater London Women’s Football League Division One with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Tower Hamlets at Lampton School on Sunday.
Lisa Grant’s stunning free-kick put Ryan Peters’ side ahead before the interval and the three points were wrapped up midway through the second-half as striker Janae Pine finished off a slick passing move for her first goal of the season.
Grant went close in the dying seconds to adding a third, her free-kick flying inches wide of the far post, as The Bees moved level on points with second-placed Tottenham Hotspur Development, a point behind league leaders Victoire Ladies.
The Bees take a break from league action next Sunday as they host Hackney Women’s FC in the John Greenacre Memorial Trophy at Lampton School.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Brentford Development were knocked out of the Sue Sharples Memorial Trophy after a 3-1 defeat to Surrey Eagles Reserves. With the winner progressing to the knockout stages from Group C it was the Eagles who quickly took control, scoring twice inside the opening ten minutes.
Julie Cartmell raised hopes of a comeback as she pulled one back on the half-hour with a neat finish but Eagles added a third after the break to ensure qualification to the Quarter-Finals. The two sides meet again at Lampton School next week, this time in the league, kick-off 2pm.
