Bees suffer penalty shootout disappointment against Liverpool in final

Brentford’s Under-17s lost out on penalties to Liverpool in the Final of a two day Youth Tournament hosted at Ipswich Town's Playford Road Training Ground this weekend. Jon De Souza’s side, made up of players from the Youth Team and Under-16s, faced Category One Elite Player Performance Plan opposition in the shape of Norwich City and Liverpool as well as fellow Category Two side Ipswich Town.

The weekend started off poorly for The Bees with a 2-0 defeat to Norwich City but goals from Sean Bird and Nik Tavares earned a point for De Souza’s side in their match against Liverpool on Friday evening. With a place in the final at stake, Brentford turned on the style against Ipswich Town on Saturday morning, Giovanni McGregor’s double and one for George Harmes setting up an appearance in the final against Liverpool.

After a 1-1 draw in normal time, Luke Dunn on the score sheet for Brentford, the match went to penalties. Despite seeing their first effort miss, The Reds were then perfect from the spot. McGregor was denied from the spot with Brentford’s third spot kick meaning Tyrick Mitchell had to score but his effort was also kept out meaning the Merseyside club got their hands on the trophy.
