Ever-present midfielder extends stay until 2020
Ryan Woods has today, Wednesday, signed a new contract extension that will keep him at Griffin Park until at least the summer of 2020. The 22-year-old has been ever present in Brentford’s Sky Bet Championship side so far this season.
The Staffordshire-born midfield player came through the youth set up at Shrewsbury Town and signed his first professional contract in 2012 at the age of 18. He made two appearances in his debut year in the First Team squad. Ryan’s performances in 2014/15 earned him a place in the League Two PFA Team of the Season in addition to helping Shrewsbury win promotion as runners-up.
Signing for Brentford in September 2015 for an undisclosed fee after 103 appearances for The Shrews, Ryan has been a regular in the side ever since. He made 43 league appearances for The Bees last season, scoring spectacular long-range goals at Reading and Milton Keynes Dons.
Ryan, who signed a three-year deal on his arrival, has signed a two-year extension that will see him remain at Brentford until 30 June 2020.
Dean Smith, Head Coach, said: “I am pleased that Ryan has committed himself to the long term future of Brentford FC, he has been a consistent performer in the first team with scope for further improvement. He is fast becoming a fans favourite with his energetic performances, he is a very important part of the plans moving forward.”
Phil Giles, Co-Director of Football, said: “Part of our long term strategy in making us a successful and sustainable Championship football club is to get our best players on long term contracts. We are therefore very pleased that Ryan has signed this new contract, almost a year to the day since he joined us. He has been an important part of our team in the past year and look forward to that being the case in seasons to come.”
