Get to know: Rico Henry

Ten things you might not know about our new man Rico Henry

  • Rico Antonio Henry was born on 8 July 1997, in Birmingham and is a boyhood Birmingham City fan.
  • He joined Walsall as an 11-year-old and made his first senior appearance for the club aged 16 in a friendly against Leeds United.
  • Rico signed his first professional contract at Walsall on his 17th birthday. The contract was offered by the current Bees management team of Dean Smith and Richard O’Kelly.
  • His debut came in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win over Scunthorpe in December 2014, his league debut followed four days later in a 3-1 win over Barnsley. 
  • All three of Rico’s professional goals have turned out to be the winner. His first professional goal was an 86th minute strike at home to Brighton and Hove Albion in last season’s Capital One Cup Second-Round. He also found the net in a 1-0 league win over Scunthorpe and a 2-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town last season.
  • A highly impressive start to the 2015/16 season saw Rico named the Football League Young Player of the Month for September.
  • Rico has represented England at Under-19 level, winning four caps since making his debut against Holland in November 2015. 
  • The left-back’s form for Walsall last season saw him included in the Football League League One Team of the Year alongside two more of our summer signings, John Egan and Romaine Sawyers. 
  • He was also nominated for the Football League Young Player of the Year award alongside Leeds United’s Lewis Cook and Fulham’s Moussa Dembele. The award being won by the Leeds man Cook.
  • In total, Rico made 57 appearances for The Saddlers and becomes our fourth permanent summer signing from Sky Bet League One after Romaine Sawyers, Daniel Bentley, and John Egan.
