Young stopper returns to Ryman League side
Brentford goalkeeper Mark Smith has joined Hampton and Richmond Borough on loan for a month. The 19-year-old – who signed a new one-year contract in the summer – completed his move to the Ryman Premier League promotion chasers today, Tuesday 27 October. The stopper, who spent much of last season with Hampton, will stay with them until 22 November and is available for the match against Wingate and Finchley this evening.
Mark signed a one-year Development Squad contract in 2014 after a successful trial following his release from Queens Park Rangers. He had loan spells at Hitchin Town and Hampton and Richmond Borough – where he played 22 games and won two Player of the Month awards – last term and played eight games for Brentford’s Development Squad in the Under-21 Professional Development League.
The stopper was offered a new one-year deal by The Bees at the end of 2014/15, promoted to the First Team group and given a squad number for the current campaign. He has been an unused substitute on two occasions this season and played a further five games for the Development Squad. He will be available for six games during his initial loan, including five Ryman Premier League matches for the side currently fourth in the table, two points off the top.
Simon Royce, Brentford FC Goalkeeper Coach, said: “The plan was always for Mark to go out on loan to further his development. Hampton are doing well this season and he will be going into a decent environment.
“The loan will get Mark used to the pressure of getting results rather than playing for the Development Squad. Hopefully this will improve Mark enough to push Jack Bonham and David Button as this is needed for a healthy and competitive goalkeeping department.”
