Josh Laurent talks to Bees Player after joining Brentford from Queens Park Rangers on a Development Squad contract

Josh Laurent said he joined Brentford from Queens Park Rangers as he feels he has more chance of playing First Team football.

The 19-year-old joined The Bees on a Development Squad contract yesterday, Wednesday January 14, turning down a new contract at QPR.

He will stay at Griffin Park until the summer of 2016 and, speaking to Bees Player yesterday, Josh said he was very happy to be at Brentford.

The former Wycombe Wanderers youngster said he had enjoyed his time at QPR but felt Brentford was a better club for him.

“I am very happy to join the Club,” said Josh.

“I am buzzing and I can’t wait to get going.

“I want to kick on.

“I was offered a new contract by QPR but I was told there was an offer from Brentford as well.

“I was told about the Club and it was a hard decision to make but I am really pleased.

“I have been at QPR since I was 17.

“I was at Wycombe before and I was given a chance by QPR, I have really enjoyed it.

“But I want to play First Team football and believe I can get it at Brentford.”

Josh said he spoke to Brentford Sporting Director Frank McParland and Manager Mark Warburton before joining The Bees, even though he will not go straight in to the First Team group.

He said he believed he would get a chance and had to take it.

“I believe I can get in to the First Team here soon,” said Josh.

“The talk from the manager has been good.

“I spoke to the manager and Frank McParland.

“They told me I could be in the team if I work hard, keep my head down and keep going.

“They have been watching my progress.

“If I do well I will get a chance, I have to take it.”

Josh was in the QPR team that were beaten 2-1 by Brentford in an Under-21 Professional Development League Two South game last month.

He scored QPR’s goal, a tremendous 25-yard strike, but said he was impressed by Brentford that day.

“The Brentford team played good football and looked to play out from the back,” said Josh.

“QPR lost against Brentford, I scored but it was a good game.

“Brentford have good principles and I want to be part of it.

“I want to play football, do things the right way, play through the midfield.”

Josh described himself as an energetic midfield player and said Brentford played the sort of football that is successful in the current era.

“I am a midfield player, I want to get on the ball and make things happen,” he said.

“I am a box-to-box player.

“I am energetic, I like to get forward, I can defend and I think I can do most things.

“Teams play through midfield now, want to pass it and Brentford do that.

“The Club is moving forward and I want to be part of it.”

Josh has already begun training with the Development Squad group, managed by former Everton and Republic of Ireland midfield player Lee Carsley.

“I want to get going as soon as I can,” he said.

“I want to prove what I am as a player and hopefully I can move forward from there.

“Lee Carsley was definitely a factor, I know a lot about him.

“I have heard he is a good coach.

“He wants to do things properly and get players in to the First Team squad.

“I need that behind me.”
