Marinus Dijkhuizen labels Oxford United defeat "embarrassing"

11 August 2015

Head Coach speaks frankly on heavy cup defeat.

Marinus Dijkhuizen refused to gloss over a performance he listed as embarrassing after seeing his side lost 4-0 to League Two side Oxford United in the Capital One Cup Round One. Three goals in the first 12 minutes effectively ended the tie, with a further goal added in the second half to hand Brentford their exit from the Capital One Cup at the first opportunity.

“It was awful,” said Marinus. “An embarrassing performance from my team. After 12 minutes it’s game over. I think there was no organisation, no leadership in the team.

“They started good with a lot of energy and every shot on the goal [went in] and after 12 minutes it’s very difficult game from then on.”

“It’s difficult because you have young guys on the pitch, and Andreas got injured just before the break. I was angry of course because they were not good in the game, a mental thing, not competing with Oxford.”

Marinus explained he had warned his players what to expect from their League Two opponents prior to the tie.

“I said in pre-season there are no easy games over here,” said Marinus. “I mentioned in my pre-match talk to the guys that Oxford are a good team. We saw that today, they put in a lot of energy and put in a good performance.”
