Brentford Under-11 side finish third in Sparkasse Holstein Cup

A young Brentford team took on some of the best sides in Germany last weekend and made a big impact.

A Brentford Under-11 team were entered in the Sparkasse Holstein Cup, which took place in Bad Oldesloe – in northern Germany, north east of Hamburg – last Saturday and Sunday, May 31 and June 1.

A total of 28 teams from five countries took part over two days.

The young Brentford squad played six games on the Saturday, including against teams from Bundesliga side Hamburger SV and Danish outfit Kolding Boldklub.

Their performances put them in to the latter stages on the Sunday and The Bees eventually finished third in the tournament.

The two teams above them were Hertha 03 Zehlendorf – a club renowned for producing young players that also faced The Bees on the first day – and Borussia Mönchengladbach, who finished sixth in the Bundesliga this season.

The young Brentford side finished ahead of teams including Werder Bremen, Danish side Odense Boldklub and West Bromwich Albion.

Ose Aibangee, Brentford FC Academy Director, went with the squad to Germany.

He said: “It is a measure of what is being achieved at Brentford that we were able to participate in a tournament with some of the biggest teams in Germany.

“It was a fantastic experience for the boys and they were excellent on and off the pitch during a demanding two days.

“They performed well as a team and finishing third was a fine achievement.

“I am extremely proud of everyone connected to the Under-11 group for their efforts.”
