Brentford Development Squad central defender Alfie Mawson signs new contract at Griffin Park

Brentford Development Squad central defender Alfie Mawson has signed a new one-year contract.

The 20-year-old signed the new deal at Griffin Park earlier today, Thursday June 5, extending his stay in TW8 for a further 12 months.

It is his second professional contract as he signed a two-year Development Squad deal in the summer of 2012 after completing his scholarship.

In an injury-hit 2012/13 season, Alfie played 11 games for The Bees in the Under-21 Professional Development League Two South.

Alfie played 12 Under-21 league games in 2013/14, scoring three times, and made his First Team debut in the Capital One Cup defeat against Derby County in August.

He also had spells out on loan at Maidenhead United, Luton Town and Welling United.

Ose Aibangee, Brentford FC Academy Director, said: “I am pleased that Alfie has signed his new deal.

“I am looking forward to watching him continue to improve over the coming season.

“As I said when we offered contracts to our Development Squad players, the policy now is to only offer contracts to players that we believe could play for Brentford in The Championship.

“We are not signing players to fulfil our Development Squad fixtures; we will give younger players a chance in those games if we need to.

“Alfie made his First Team debut last year and has made excellent progress since he joined us as a 16-year-old after leaving Reading.

“He has a chance to impress in pre-season and push in to the First Team picture.

“Everyone in the Academy will do all they can to help him do that.”

Alfie spoke to Bees Player after signing his contract; subscribers can see an interview with the defender soon.
