“You don’t put pressure on yourselves, but it was a must win game"
Tony Craig said Brentford’s players knew their match against Stevenage was “must win”.
The Bees went in to the fixture having not won in five in all competitions, taking two points from their last four npower League One matches and seven from their last seven.
But goals from Tom Adeyemi and Marcello Trotta gave The Bees the win and lifted the mood after a 2-2 draw with Bury on Saturday.
Tony said Brentford were patient and stuck to their game plan.
“It was important to win,” said Tony, speaking to Bees Player after the match.
“We all knew that deep down.
“You don’t put pressure on yourselves, but it was a must win game.
“Thankfully we got the result we were looking for.
“We had a lot of possession.
“We were patient, which was good, we rushed a few things on Saturday but we worked on trying to relax and letting them come at us.
“We took our time and the plan worked.”
Tom Adeyemi’s opening goal came a minute before half time and was smacked in to the top corner when a corner was half cleared.
“It always helps to score in the last minute of the first half,” said Tony.
“It changes the half time team talk.
“Thankfully we got it.
“It was a great goal from Tom, 25 yards out, top bin; you don’t get better than that.
“Our results haven’t been the best of late.
“For someone to step up and do that for us was a bit of a relief.
“Tom did it today and we have others who can.”
During the 2-2 draw with Bury on Saturday, Brentford failed to make the most of going ahead twice, sitting deep.
Tony said there was a big improvement in that against Stevenage and The Bees survived when the visitors pressed before scoring a second through Marcello Trotta.
The central defender said the players believed the win would come as they had been playing well without winning games.
“We had a good meeting on Sunday,” said Tony.
“We went through our strengths and weaknesses.
“When we went 1-0 up on Saturday we dropped as a team.
“Today we didn’t, we pushed on a got a second.
“In every game, a team will have a bit of play.
“We stood firm and got through it.
“The second goal was Marcello all over, 20 yards, top bin.
“The win had been coming.
“We haven’t had the results of late but we also haven’t had the luck.
“We got that tonight.
“We are a good squad, a good team and we had to keep believing.
“The results won’t go for us all the time but after tonight we can kick on.
“Every win helps, five without a win was not good.”
Brentford’s next match is an FA Cup with Budweiser Fourth Round Replay against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The Bees earned the tie with a 2-2 draw at Griffin Park in the first match and Tony said the players wanted to give another good account of themselves.
“We are all looking forward to it,” he said.
“I haven’t played there but I have been there a few times.
“It’s the sort of game you want to be involved in.
“You can enjoy the day; we did so when we played here.
“We gave a good account of ourselves at Griffin Park and hopefully we can do so again.
“When the press come down, the TV cameras, everyone wants to impress.
“You only enjoy it by playing.
“We will go there with a game plan, we will try to stick to it and give a good account of ourselves.”
