Bees end pre-season with convincing win
Brentford ended their pre-season campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park thanks to goals from Clayton Donaldson, a Grant Basey own goal, Stuart Dallas and Kevin O’Connor.
The Bees looked dominant throughout and had plenty of chances to win by a much bigger margin.
Donaldson should have given the Bees the lead after 15 minutes after being put through by a slide rule pass from Jake Reeves but he put the ball wide of the post from eight yards.
Former Bees’ keeper Nikki Bull had to be in inspired form to keep the scores level after that. He denied Farid El-Alagui after the Moroccan had intercepted a weak back-pass.
He then denied Harry Forrester although El-Alagui should have converted the rebound but he flashed the ball wide with the goal gaping.
Brentford were then denied three times in 10 seconds mid-way through the half when Harlee Dean’s header was cleared off the line before Bull brilliantly denied Donaldson from point blank range with Forrester’s effort from the rebound deflected narrowly wide.
Brentford finally took the lead in the 38th minute. Donaldson was played in by Forrester on the left-hand edge of the box. His low shot squirmed under Bull and nestled in the far corner.
The Bees lead was doubled four minutes later. Simon Moore’s long clearance was flicked on by Farid El-Alagui and former-Bee Grant Basey nodded it past his own keeping under pressure from Donaldson.
Wycombe came out at the start of the second half much sharper and got back into the game when a defensive mix-up saw after an hour saw the ball cannon off Harlee Dean and into the bottom corner.
Jonathan Douglas had a golden chance to settle any nerves but he managed to fire the wrong side of the post from six yards after Leon Redwood’s shot had been turned away by replacement Wycombe keeper Matt Ingram.
The Bees nerves were settled after 73 minutes when after a period of fantastic possession football, Myles Weston fired a great cross across the six yard box from the left wing and Stuart Dallas applied the finishing touch.
The gloss was added to the performance five minutes later when Wycombe made a hash of clearing a corner and Leon Legge’s header was helped over the line from two-yards out by Kevin O’Connor.
