Women exit Capital Intermediate Cup

Osborne's side lose in Quarter-Final despite goals from Ezzahiri and Harris

24 February 2022

Brentford FC Women’s First Team were knocked out of the Capital Intermediate Cup after they lost 5-2 to an impressive Dorking Wanderers side.

Head Coach Karleigh Osborne recognised the quality of Dorking but was disappointed with how his side performed on the day and said: “We know that Dorking are a good outfit and we’ve played in some tight games against them in the past. This time around I don’t think our performance was good enough, especially in the first half, we were sloppy in possession and didn’t show enough intensity.”

It was an electric start to the game and there were two goals in the opening five minutes. It was Dorking who grabbed the opener after just 30 seconds, they broke down the left and delivered a wonderful, whipped cross, which was then latched onto and dispatched into the Brentford net.

Despite the immediate setback The Bees responded with a goal of their own. Rebekah Edwards, playing centrally in this game, did fantastically well to chase down a lost cause and then hold off a defender with a great display of strength. Edwards then had the presence of mind to cut it back to Sara Lopez Ezzahiri who swept the ball into the bottom left.

Unfortunately for Brentford it only took Dorking ten minutes to regain their lead. A ball over the top found the home side’s pacey striker and she lofted the ball over the onrushing Bees keeper.

Dorking were causing Brentford problems on the left and this resulted in the third goal. Their left winger got to the by-line and put a low cross in to a dangerous area, the first effort could only be palmed away and the opposite winger was on hand to tap home. Making it 3-1 to Dorking after 25 minutes.

The second half was more of an even battle, but it was Dorking who found their fourth and all but ended the game as a contest. They were dangerous down the flanks again and this time some neat play down the right lead to the ball falling to an attacker in the box and she slotted home calmly.

The Bees did manage to find a second on the break, again Edwards was the provider this time she found space on the right, before cutting back to Georgia Harris who smashed the ball low and hard through the keeper’s legs. Again, the home side found an instant response to put an end to any hopes of a late Brentford comeback. This time a set piece was whipped in from the centre circle and a flicked header was well guided into the bottom left-hand corner.
