Match Report: Brentford WFC 3 Clapham United WFC 5

Womens teams in action on Sunday

29 October 2018

A stirring second-half comeback from Brentford Women’s First-Team fell just short as Clapham United WFC took the points at Bedfont Sports on Sunday.

Suitably in the shadow of Heathrow Airport, it was a flying start for the visitors from South London as they raced into a 3-0 lead and could have added to it during a first-half they totally dominated. The opening goal came courtesy of a near post header from a corner after just four minutes before a two-minute double salvo midway through the half had the away side cruising at the interval.

However, Justin Ali and Nathan Mobey’s side pulled one back early on in the second-half as a Clapham defender turned Jenn Amols Brett’s free-kick into her own net. That goal gave The Bees renewed hope and a two-goal deficit became one shortly after with Shannon Read volleying home at the back post from a deep corner.

A rollercoaster game then swung back in the favour of the away side as they made it 4-2 with a low shot from the edge of the area. Again though The Bees responded. Laura Palfrey was afforded too much space on the left edge of the box and she fired into the bottom corner with a quarter of an hour to play.

The momentum was with the home side and a remarkable comeback was the width of a crossbar away as Palfrey saw her header cannon back off the woodwork. As The Bees piled forward in the final couple of minutes they were hit on the break as Clapham finally managed to put the game to bed with a close range finish.

Defeat leaves The Bees sixth in the Greater London Women’s Football League Division One with six points from their seven games so far this term. There’s a chance to avenge their opening day defeat to Leyton Orient WFC Development as The Os head to Bedfont Sports next Sunday, kick-off 2.30pm.

Elsewhere, it’s now eight defeats from eight in Division Two North for Brentford Development after they were beaten 5-0 by Headstone Manor LFC. The Bees are away at eighth-placed Wealdstone LFC next Sunday, kick-off 2pm.
