Dev Squad do the double over Watford Ladies

2-1 win completes six-point swing for Women's squad

20 April 2021

Brentford Women's Development Squad won their second match of the day against Watford Ladies to secure top spot in Division 2 North.

The second game of the day got underway and within the first five minutes Rabia Azam had given Brentford the lead. The ball fell to her after a Clifford free-kick deflected off the wall, wasting no time Azam took it on the half-volley across the face of goal and it found the net.

Watford put the pressure on Brentford, not keen on losing six points to their opponents in one day, but the defence stayed strong. Hannah Iguchi made a string of saves to keep her clean sheet intact. Watford were winning most of the battles but Brentford weren't letting them through easily.

Just before half-time, The Bees got a chance to extend their lead. Jasmine Williamson broke in the penalty area but was bundled over from behind and referee Andy Kowalski pointed to the spot. Clifford stepped up and made no mistake, rifling the ball into the roof of the net.

Watford pulled a goal back just seconds after the restart. Hannah McCorkindale-Brown reacted quickest to a cross into the box by Anna Black, slotting it beyond Iguchi to set up a tight second 45.

After a second half full of near misses and tight offside calls, Watford should have levelled things at the end. McCorkindale-Brown went one-on-one with Iguchi after a long switched ball from left to right. The number nine shot low but Iguchi stuck out a leg and connected, the ball fizzing wide of the post. An incredible late save, which turned out to be crucial as the final whistle blew moments later.

Two wins from two confirmed top spot in the Greater London WFL Division 2 North for Will Blithing's side. Two more wins could see them take the title this season.
