Match Preview: Forest Green Rovers XI v Brentford B

Young Bees set for Forest Green test

6 September 2021

Brentford B return to action on Tuesday as they take on a Forest Green XI in a 1pm kick-off at Melksham Town’s InfiLED Arena.

The behind closed doors match will see the side play their first match of September having had a pause during the international break.

Last time out the young Bees were narrowly beaten by a Chelsea XI at their Cobham Training Ground and they’ll get back to action in Melksham against the League Two side.

Last time they met

The young Bees played Forest Green at the same venue back in March last season and they ran out 3-1 winners. The 2020/21 B Team top scorer Aaron Pressley grabbed the game’s opening goal with a header but Rovers hit back through Jake Young. Gustav Mogensen and Lachlan Brook then managed to get themselves on the scoresheet to give Neil MacFarlane’s young side the victory.

Of course, Thomas Frank’s First Team also came up against Forest Green this season in the Carabao Cup which also saw a 3-1 score line as The Bees navigated their way through to the Third Round of the competition

Team news

With international matches still going ahead, the likes of Fin Stevens, Joe Adams and Nathan Shepperd are all away with Wales Under-21s, whilst Daniel Oyegoke and Matt Cox are also away with England Under-19s. Val Adedokun will look to get more minutes for the B Team under his belt after making his debut last time out against Chelsea. The youngster has now returned to the B Team fold following his international training camp with Republic of Ireland Under-19s.

Forest Green could play a mixture of first team and youth players in Melksham. The club are currently second in SkyBet League Two and drew 0-0 with Exeter City last time out.

Coverage

We intend to provide a live stream of the fixture in Melksham on our YouTube channel which will go live shortly before kick-off. We will also have updates across social media as the young Bees look to get back to winning ways.

Young Bees held in Wiltshire

7 September 2021

Brentford B were held to a 0-0 draw by a Forest Green XI at the InfiLED Arena on a scorching day in Wiltshire.

The young Bees’ best moment came when Nathan Young-Coombes beat the offside trap before firing a low effort against the post in what was, in fairness, an even match throughout.

It was Rovers who started the brighter of the two teams with the Sky Bet League Two side fielding players very much in and around the first team setup at the New Lawn.

Ebou Adams had an attempt in the first period with his low effort stinging the palms of Ben Winterbottom. That preceded Brentford's best attempt when good play from Jan Žambůrek and Max Haygarth in the middle of the field saw Young-Coombes set away. He charged in on goal from the left and attempted to slot the ball into the far corner but could only find the right-hand post.

Jake Young continued to threaten in behind for Rovers but he was well marshalled by the likes of Ben Hockenhull and Nico Jones. Josh March also carried a threat for the opponents as he looked to press at every opportunity in a game where clear cut chances were few and far between.

Žambůrek along with Haygarth were perhaps Brentford B's best chances of creating and making something happen, and they both showed glimpses as they looked to get the ball forward but credit to the opposition, who often allowed little space for the players to manoeuvre.

A good passage of play in the second period came when Žambůrek turned well to drive inside before releasing a powerful right footed drive which was well blocked. Haygarth would too have sighters whilst Lachlan Brook and Ryan Trevitt had low crosses turned away before Young-Coombes could get on the end of them at the near post.

Young went really close in the second half as Rovers perhaps looked slightly more likely to find the net going into the final 15 minutes. The Forest Green forward slalomed his was though a crowd of bodies before slotting wide whilst Josh March saw his lofted effort go just over the bar.

Winterbottom then confirmed a clean sheet for himself when he made a really good save in the final moments to deny one of the Rovers substitutes who was through on goal. The B Team keeper stood tall before making the block as Brentford B will now look to take that clean sheet and try to build some momentum.
