A look ahead to Tuesday's match in Portugal

7 February 2022

Brentford B play their second match of their Atlantic Cup campaign in Portugal on Tuesday afternoon when they take on Danish side Brøndby IF at the Estádio Algarve in a 3pm kick-off.

The young Bees go into the match looking to claim their first points of the tournament having been narrowly beaten by Icelandic side Breiðablik on Thursday last week.

About Brøndby IF

Brøndby IF are next up for The Bees as they take on the Danish side, who are currently third in the Danish Superliga after 17 games going into their winter break. The side are set to return to league action in late February when they face FC Nordsjælland on 20 February.

The side have been playing in the Europa League this season and they have taken on Lyon, Rangers and Sparta Prague.

In charge of Brøndby is Neils Frederiksen, who took charge of the side in 2019. He has also been in charge of Lyngby, where he worked with Brentford player Christian Nørgaard, before he departed for Esbjerg in 2015. He took charge of Denmark Under-21s for four years and he took them to the European Championships in 2017 and 2019.

The side’s first match of the tournament saw them beat Vålerenga 2-1 with goals from Kevin Mensah and Andreas Bruus.

Young Bees pick up victory in Atlantic Cup over Danish giants

10 February 2022

Brentford B picked up a fantastic win in their second match of the Atlantic Cup as they beat current Danish champions Brøndby IF at the Estádio Algarve in Portugal.

It was a performance full of grit and determination which will serve Neil MacFarlane’s side well in their development. Nathan Young-Coombes grabbed the game’s only goal after just seven minutes with a clever finish.

The young Bees were boosted by the addition of Young-Coombes and Daniel Oyegoke to the squad after their First Team exploits as they came into the starting XI, as did defender Nico Jones who made up a back three alongside Tristan Crama and Ben Hockenhull.

The opener came about through fantastic pressing as Jaakko Oksanan won back possession before he played an excellent pass into the path of Young-Coombes, who cleverly chipped the ball home into the bottom right-hand corner from a fairly tight angle.

The Danish side were often comfortable in possession throughout with experienced heads right through the team. A dangerous cross on 12 minutes was well turned away by Jones as the opponents looked to quickly equalise. A good save from Matthew Cox then followed before Paris Maghoma had a really good chance to make it 2-0 when he curled from distance, but for a smart save by the goalkeeper.

On 31 minutes Cox was in action again as he made a fairly routine save to deny Carl Björk with his legs. Just a couple of minutes later, though, The Bees were forced to make a change as Cox was replaced by Roco Rees- this was due to a foul by the Brentford shot stopper which the referee deemed to be a red card offence. As per the rules enforced by the tournament committee, Brentford had to make a substitution rather than be reduced to 10 men.

Going into the second half, The Bees knew they had to be at their best to continue to stay ahead. That was when the likes of Hockenhull, Crama and Jones made a number of blocks to keep out dangerous crosses for the opponents.

On the hour there was almost a magical moment when Maghoma tried his luck from just inside the Brøndby half. A looping effort was on its way in but for an important tip over from the goalkeeper.

On 68 minutes, Rees made a smart save to deny Mathias Kvistgaarden before Crama pulled off another impressive block 12 minutes from time following an effort from close range for the Danish side.

Roy Syla had the final chance of the game when he almost put the icing on the cake for The Bees. After working some space he tried his luck from the edge of the box but the goalkeeper was equal to it. Brentford B now have three points following the victory.
