Match Preview: Brentford B v Luton Town XI

Young Bees set to take on The Hatters today

24 February 2021

Brentford B are in action today as they take on a Luton Town XI at Bisham Abbey in an 11:30am kick-off.

The match was originally due to get under way at midday but has been brought forward by 30 minutes. It will be an opportunity for the young Bees to get back to winning ways following their 4-3 defeat to a Stevenage XI earlier this month.

Their opponents could well feature a mix of youth and experience as Neil MacFarlane’s side look to test themselves against another tough opponent.

The young Bees have a relatively settled squad on the injury front, but though back in training, the game could come too soon for long-term absentee Paris Maghoma who is stepping up his recovery from injury. Ryan Trevitt also looks set to miss the fixture through injury, but other than that Neil MacFarlane has a settled squad to choose from. Mads Bidstrup gained his first taste of action for the young Bees at Stevenage and he has recently been involved in the First Team match day squads.

The last time the side played at Bisham Abbey they beat Hemel Hempstead Town 2-0 as Max Haygarth and a Trialist grabbed the goals on the day.

Brentford B last took on a side from Luton Town back in September 2019 in the sunshine at Griffin Park. The Hatters edged that match with a goal from Callum McManaman in the first half whilst the likes of Josh Dasilva and Joel Valencia featured for the young Bees on the day.

We intend to provide live updates of this fixture across social media, as well as a match report and post-match interviews. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a live stream of this game.

Young Bees narrowly beaten at Bisham Abbey

28 February 2021

Brentford B were narrowly beaten 2-1 by a Luton Town XI at Bisham Abbey earlier today.

Gustav Mogensen had got the side back in the game after they had fallen behind early in the first half, but The Hatters claimed the win following a second half strike on the hour mark.

The 90 minutes provided a good opportunity for players to get more minutes under their belts with Wraynel Hercules coming in from the start, as well as the likes of Aubrel Koutsimouka, Ben Hockenhull and Gustav Mogensen all getting good game time, among four Trialists who featured.

It was a match which saw Town go ahead on 10 minutes, despite some good early play from The Bees who looked promising down the left when Koutsimouka flashed a cross into the box, but nobody was able to get on the end of it.

That opening goal came, arguably, against the run of play when a ball into the box wasn’t dealt with before Dion Pereira tapped in from close range.

After the early setback Brentford B continued to dominate possession but no clear-cut chances came within the opening 30 minutes. Then a moment of real quality saw a well-worked move find Hercules who curled an effort towards the top corner which the keeper saved, but he could only direct the ball into the path of Mogensen who found the net first time.

The goal came in perhaps what was the best spell for The Bees, but they were unable to make their dominance count with Luton forced to defend a number of balls into the box going into the break.

Winterbottom would be called into action on 56 minutes when he pulled off an excellent save to deny Solomon Addy, who darted into the box, and with Koutsimouka unable to challenge because of the risk of giving away a penalty, the Brentford keeper was out quick to deny the Luton man as he pushed the ball past the post.

A major moment in the game then saw The Bees denied another goal when a low ball into the box saw Mogensen turn an effort towards goal but for an excellent save from the Town keeper as he kept out the powerful attempt. There were also calls for a penalty in the build-up to the chance with calls for handball, but the referee waved away the appeals.

The Bees were then punished a moment later when a deep free-kick once again wasn’t dealt with and Sam Beckwith pounced on a loose ball to fire home.

Neil MacFarlane’s side kept battling to try to get something out of the game and Valgeir Valgeirsson continued to threaten down the right with some really dangerous deliveries. Another cross from the right would see Koutsimouka head just over with a powerful attempt which just lacked the accuracy. A late Ben Hockenhull red card for two bookable offences would precede the final whistle in a game where, in fairness, The Bees perhaps deserved at least a draw from.

Brentford B: Winterbottom, Valgeirsson, Gordon, Koutsimouka (Robb, 85), O’Connor, Trialist (Carre, 63), Mogensen, Hercules (Trialist, 75), Trialist (Trialist, 63), Stevens, Hockenhull
Subs not used: J. Thompson

Luton Town XI: Horlick, Jones, Francis, Panter, Halsey, Beckwith, Chambers, McJannett, Addy, Pererira, Trialist
Subs: Cowler, Wedd, Allen, Newton, Nicolson, Wilson, Tompkins, Stevens
