Jayden Onen looked likely to break the deadlock after only three minutes but for a fine save from Michael Johnson in the Town goal.
The hosts could have taken the lead in similar fashion a few minutes later. Nathan Shepperd showed great acrobatics to palm the ball away from the top corner after Adam Mills had a go from range.
Gustav Mogensen scored the first goal after 24 minutes. The hosts played around with it for too long at the back, lost the ball and there was the Danish striker to shoot low into the bottom corner.
Barely two minutes later, Ali Coote doubled the Brentford lead. A neat one-two on the edge of the box saw the Scot drive into the penalty area, before drilling an effort below Johnson.
Mills was at it again for the home side after half an hour. He cut inside then sent the ball against the crossbar from the edge of the box, the follow-up came to nothing as the linesman put his flag up on the near side.
Just before the break, Braintree might have got one back. A low cross from Tom Richardson fizzed right across the face of goal before Cole Dasilva cleared it at the far post.
After the break, The Iron were on top for most of the early stages. Ade Cole had Shepperd scrambling across his goal to watch a low strike narrowly miss the post. Then it was Alfie Cerulli cutting in and hitting a similar effort wide.
After 57 minutes, Brentford grabbed their third goal. Onen made it all himself. Good positioning allowed him to pick off a pass out from the Braintree backline, then he nutmegged the nearest defender before driving into the box. Johnson came flying out but Onen showed a cool head to sweep the ball beneath him and find the net.
A series of substitutes from the visitors broke up the game for a while before Brentford found their rhythm and managed a fourth. A clipped pass into the box from the right landed perfectly for Jaden Brissett. He took one touch to control it, then took a second to knock it home via a deflection from a defender.
Town were pushing on to get something from the game and might have had one with 10 minutes to go. Ade Cole found the ball at his feet on the edge of the box and curled a shot towards what looked like a clear section of net. Sub Simon Andersson showed sublime reflexes to get across and cling on to the shot.
