Match Preview: Wingate & Finchley v Brentford B

Brentford B set for cup action on Tuesday evening

27 January 2020

Brentford B are swiftly back in action following their trip to Portugal when they travel to Wingate & Finchley in the Quarter-Final of the Middlesex FA Senior Challenge Cup on Tuesday evening.

The match, which will be played at Wingate’s Maurice Rebak Stadium, kicks off at 7.45pm and the match will prove another difficult test for the young Bees as they continue their development coming up against men’s teams.

This will be Brentford B’s second fixture in this competition having progressed to the next stage following a penalty shootout win over Hanwell Town back in October.

Of course, the young Bees will be looking to defend their crown as Senior Challenge Cup champions having lifted the trophy last season after beating Harrow Borough in the final of the competition at Griffin Park.

Wingate & Finchley play in the Isthman League Premier Division and currently sit bottom of the table having picked up 14 points from their first 26 matches of the season. Their last match saw them play out a 0-0 draw with Brightlingsea Regent at home.

Discussing the challenge that Wingate will pose the young Bees, Brentford B Head Coach Neil MacFarlane said: “It will be a totally different test in a totally different environment. The club give the boys the platform to give them every sort of match for their development and they’re responding. We can’t ask any more of them.”

Of course, the match coincides with a first team fixture at Griffin Park as Thomas Frank’s side welcome Nottingham Forest, but if fans wish to come along and lend their support to the young Bees then adult tickets are priced at £12, whilst concessions are £6, £3 for under-16s and free for under-12s.

The young Bees could make some changes to the side that began the last match in Portugal on Saturday and are allowed to select 16 players for the match. Having had time to settle into the group in Portugal, central midfielder Paris Maghoma could well make his second start for the club, fresh from netting his first against FC Astana in superb fashion.

Young Bees progress in cup competition

2 February 2020

Brentford B progressed to the semi-final of the Middlesex FA Senior Challenge Cup with a 1-0 win over Wingate & Finchley at the Maurice Rebak Stadium.

Gustav Mogensen got the all-important goal as the young Bees picked up a deserved win having dominated the chances on a chilly night in North London.

It was the Isthmian Premier Division side that had the ball in the net first after just two minutes, but the goal was ruled out for offside when Sean Grace rose to nod the ball into the net from Charlie Ruff’s in-swinging corner from the left.

Fredrik Hammar would have The Bees’ first chance of the game just a few minutes later when he worked it well with Mogensen before sending a fierce shot goalwards which was well tipped over by Fergal Hale-Brown.

More good opportunities would fall for Brentford B inside the first 10 minutes as Paris Maghoma’s free kick was blocked well before wonderful dribbling from Matej Majka then saw him tee up Joe Adams just inside the box before he swept the ball just over with his left foot.

Hammar would try his luck again when a David Titov throw found the young Swede who hit a low effort with his left foot and once again forced a smart stop from Hale-Brown as Neil MacFarlane’s side looked to go ahead.

Tage Kennedy then opened up a glorious chance for the hosts when he used his speed to skip past Kane O’Connor before crossing low, but the pullback was just behind the onrushing Olu Akinsanya as the young Bees managed to clear.

It would then be Brentford’s turn to have a goal ruled out when Arthur Read turned well before forcing a save out of the Wingate keeper, who could only push the ball into the path of Mogensen to tap home, but for the offside flag as the goal was chalked off.

Read then went inches from putting Brentford B ahead on 37 minutes when he whipped in a dangerous freekick from wide out on the right, and it seemed to catch Hale-Brown out as the ball crashed against the crossbar and away as the first half ended goalless.

The young Bees would start the second period excellently as they went ahead just a couple of minutes after the restart. After good play in midfield saw the ball threaded on to Mogensen who controlled well before he drove centrally and slotted home to get his 14th goal of the season.

Mogensen would have a glorious chance to double Brentford’s lead on the hour mark when Titov crossed superbly, and despite heading the ball back across goal, he forced an excellent save from the Wingate shot stopper.

More opportunities would fall for the young Bees as they continued to dominate much of the play. Both Mogensen and Christian Tue Jensen would have powerful attempts saved and Maghoma also had a good chance when he tricked his way into the box before his effort was pushed away from goal.

For as long as the score stayed at 1-0, though, the home side were still in the game and they had a glorious chance to level when a low cross in from the right found Sean Grace, and despite trying to stab an effort goalwards, Patrik Gunnarsson did well to block as The Bees held out for the win.
