Brentford B leave with win and defeat from GC Campus games

Reece Cole sees red, Joe Hardy nets two

27 September 2018

Kevin O'Connor's side managed a win and a defeat from their two matches at GC Campus on Wednesday 26 September.

The B Team had birthday boy Joe Hardy to thank for scoring the only goals in each game. The first was a 1-0 win over SC Freiburg U21. The second was a 3-1 loss to Grasshopper Club Zurich U23, which included a red card and two penalties.

Report: Brentford B 1-0 SC Freiburg U21

The first match saw both teams share a lot of possession, with Brentford taking an early chance and hanging on for the win.

Kolbeinn Finnsson was the star of the first match, creating the first real chance halfway through the opening period. His powerful shot from distance was saved by Elvin Kovac.

Minutes later, Finnsson turned provider as he slipped a neat through ball towards Hardy in the box. The 20-year-old striker barged his way past his marker to dink the ball over the keeper and into the net.

In the second half, Freiburg went close after 10 minutes with a corner routine that ended in Anthony Schmid heading the ball narrowly over. The same thing happened later in the half, when again Brentford lost their men as the German side went agonisingly close to levelling the score.

Hardy also saw a powerful shot blocked on its way to goal by Niklas Hoffman in the latter stages of the game.

B Team XI: Andersson; Dasilva, Carroll, Oliver, Kirk; Oksanen, Cole, Coote (Zamburek 29 mins); Finnsson, Hardy, Majka

Freiburg U21: Kovac; Kammerknecht, Hoffman, Schlotterbeck, Hug; Rinaldi, Boukhalfa, Torres, Keitel, Rodewald; Schmid

Report: GC Zürich U23 3-1 Brentford B

The second game of the day saw O'Connor make five changes to his starting lineup, with each man from the bench getting minutes in the next fixture.

It took just 20 seconds for Hardy to open the scoring. David Titov chased down a backpass to goalkeeper Mateo Matic, blocked the clearance and it fell kindly for Hardy. The striker smashed it home from close range.

Eight minutes later, the hosts were level. Brentford lost the ball in midfield, it was played forward into the box to Mergm Bajrami and the winger struck his shot into the top corner.

Hardy had a chance to put his side back into the lead after 36 minutes. When Finnsson won the ball from Serge Müller on the edge of his own box, he squared it for Hardy to go one-on-one with Matic. The effort was struck low towards the bottom left corner but Matic reacted quickly to dive and keep it out.

Two minutes later, Zurich were ahead. A free-kick given away on the edge of the box by Jan Zamburek allowed Nemanja Antonov the attempt he needed to put his side a goal up. He curled his free-kick up over the wall and it nestled in the top left corner, despite Gunnarsson going so close to tipping it away.

Within three minutes of the restart of the second half, Grasshopper had another goal. This one came from the penalty spot when Nikolaj Kirk lunged in on Meriton Kastrati. Controversially, it looked outside the box but the referee pointed to the spot. They converted the kick and took a two-goal cushion into the remainder of the match.

With 51 minutes on the clock, Cole Dasilva was booked for pushing Nikola Gjorgjev off the ball. Replays showed the defender had lashed out at Reece Cole while the midfielder was on the floor, but it was missed by the officials.

After 74 minutes, The Bees won a penalty of their own. Kirk was fouled on his way into the box and stepped up to take the kick himself. He drove the ball left but the keeper guessed correctly and smothered the ball on the line.

Sixty seconds went by before Cole was shown a red card. After having a word in the referee's ear, he was given his marching order for dissent and Brentford played the remainder of the game with 10 men.

B Team XI: Gunnarsson; Dasilva, Oliver, Edobor, Kirk; Oksanen (Cole h/t), Zamburek, Mitchell (Carroll 58 mins); Finnsson, Hardy (Majka 63 mins), Titov
