Brentford B beat SC Cambuur 2-1 on a sweltering Saturday afternoon at Jersey Road. Fredrik Hammar and Kolbeinn Finnsson scored the goals in the first half for Lars Friis’ side.
The home team started four trialists across the back line, ahead of goalkeeper Simon Andersson making his tenth start of the season. The midfield showed one change from the Cup Final on Tuesday night, Jayden Onen stepping in for Ali Coote.
Cambuur could’ve been ahead in the opening seconds when a low cross into the box was cut out by Onen in front of the striker.
The Bees then took the lead after seven minutes. Fredrik Hammar finding space just inside the box before smashing it into the roof of the net.
With quarter of an hour gone, Onen played a long cross-field pass into the path of Jaden Brissett. The winger cut inside from the left and shot but it was blocked bravely on the edge of the area.
Brentford’s second came in the 27th minute. Good play outside the box ended with the ball at Finnsson’s feet, the Iceland forward drilling it in from close range. The Cambuur back line were adamant it was offside, but the flag never came.
The visitors got back into the game before the break. A free-kick won on the edge of the box was sent under the wall and found the bottom left corner.
Matej Majka thought he had made it three but for a superb save from the goalkeeper just before the interval. The winger volleyed it at the target, but the keeper managed to stick up his hand and tip it over the crossbar.
At half-time, Andersson was brought off for a trialist keeper. That same stopper was almost in trouble from the off when a short pass fell to a Cambuur striker. He couldn’t take advantage and it sailed over the bar.
Brissett nearly scored the third when he broke inside from the left. The goalie was sharply down to his right to parry away the shot.
Just before the hour, captain Jaakko Oksanen sent a free-kick over the crossbar from the 20 yards out. The keeper was rooted but watched it soar over his apex.
Cambuur had two good chances in the next 10 minutes. The first came from sheer determination as the forward dug the ball out from his feet and nearly looped it over the trialist between the sticks. Then it was another defensive mix-up that allowed the away side to break one-on-one. A superb reaction save from our goalkeeper kept SCC at bay.
Joe Hardy went close with the last real chance of the game, taking a Brissett cross on the volley near the edge of the penalty area. He connected well but it was caught and held by the Cambuur keeper.
